A glimmer of hope for the North Sea cod will be delivered by scientists later this week.
After six years of calling for a total ban on the catching of cod to prevent stocks collapsing altogether, international scientists say that the number of young fish has increased.
In their annual assessment of stocks, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, which advises EU ministers, says...(complete article here).
Careful management of our ocean fisheries can create a resurgence of stocks just as hunting seasons and management plans for wildlife have helped in the resurgence of many game species. The biggest problem is the necessity of International cooperation.

Ladybugs in New York
Out here in "flyover" country we've known for years that Ladybugs were beneficial insects. It's nice to know that our city cousins are figuring it out.

NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Groundskeepers at New York City apartment complexes are using ladybugs as an alternative to chemical-based insecticides to manage their landscaped grounds.
Groundskeepers released 720,000 ladybugs over an 18-block area in an effort to control aphids, mites, and other unwanted pests, The New York Times reports.
The supplier of the ladybugs told the apartment buildings' owners the ladybugs would consume nearly 4.6 billion aphids per day.
Carl Keil, grounds manager at one of the facilities, said he was not concerned over upsetting the ecological balance.
“I think they’ll just help them control the population,” Keil told the Times, referring to the aphid population.
New York City park officials echoed Keil.“Besides being beautiful, ladybugs are also quite benign," said Warner Johnson, spokesman for the parks department.

It's good to see someone other than the U.S. contributing to malaria control. However, it seems like during the "Cold War" the contibutions from Russia (U.S.S.R. at the time) always came with strings attached.

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists are part of a team that has found a vital clue for battling a disease called porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), which costs U.S. swine producers about $560 million annually.
PRRSV-infected pigs are susceptible to pneumonia and reproductive losses, and infected sows give birth to weak piglets. It can take weeks or even months for them to recover from the virus, which evolves and adapts quickly to environmental challenges like vaccines and medications.
Scientists Joan Lunney, Patricia Boyd and Daniel Kuhar conduct research at the ARS Animal Parasitic Diseases Laboratory in Beltsville, Md. Working with animal scientist Rodger Johnson and graduate student Derek Petry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, they evaluated two lines of swine for genetic resistance to PRRSV. The Nebraska Index line (I) was chosen because of its improved reproductive traits, and the Hampshire by Duroc cross (HD) was selected for its high growth rates.
All pigs in both groups became infected after exposure to PRRSV. However, I pigs generally recovered more quickly, maintained higher levels of weight gain during...(complete article here).

Bans on livestock movement in low-risk foot-and-mouth areas across Britain have now been lifted.
Officials have also ended the disease protection zone in Surrey after no further cases of the disease emerged.

A French hybrid of an aspen tree may one day rid water supplies of the industrial degreaser—and human carcinogen—trichloroethylene (TCE), one of the most common contaminants at toxic waste sites in the U.S. And the tiny, but tractable, Arabidopsis plant may mop up the residue of RDX, a military explosive blasted into the soils at firing ranges.
"Plants are a good method for remediating soil and water," says Stuart Strand, an environmental engineer at the University of Washington who has worked on creating the genetically modified pollution-gobbling aspen tree. Even in their natural state...(complete article here).
Genetic engineering is definitely here to stay. I have mixed feelings about it because scientists don't know where to draw the line. But, I do believe there are worthy applications.
Questions: If human conducted genetic engineering creates a new creature/plant/organism for a specific purpose, is that saying that scientists are smarter than God? Or, is it saying that we don't yet know the consequences of our God-playing? Or, is it the desired result of the cumulative knowlege of our God-inspired species and is part of His plan? No wonder few scientists believe in God. They think they are one.

Blog Action Day for the Environment
October 15 is Blog Action Day for the Environment. There is a button with link in my sidebar. I would encourage everyone to join in this particular Action Day. Most of you who read this blog are very conservative. So am I. Al Gore receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for his fiction film on Global Warming doesn't sit too well with me. I think it devalues the Nobel. Although, I guess that Jimmy Carter receiving it some years back pretty much soured me on its value anyway.
On this Blog Action Day there will be thousands of posts by liberal environmental activists crying "doom and gloom" about the environment. We need to make certain that more conservative views are represented. Don't misunderstand me, I do believe that we need to care for the environment. Water, air and other pollution are health hazards. We are commanded by God to be good stewards of the resources that he places in our care -- which is the earth and all that is in it. However, stewardship implies Conservation -- not Preservation. There is a big difference.
Preservationists want to depopulate the earth. They also desire to see those few who are left living in a "natural" state -- being one with nature. It's interesting to me that the only ones they feel deserve to live on this planet are members of their small but very vocal clique. It is a very elitist position. If most of them were placed in nature without their gadgets and gizmos they would starve to death. Many of them are totally dependent on the technology that they condemn. Al Gore is a prime example. What would he do without his jet to travel around the world?
Conservationists on the other hand are focused on sustainability. It is a concept that makes sense. Conservation is caring for resources in a manner that will provide maximum benefit for now and future use. Conservationists are in favor of sustainable hunting and fishing. They believe in the utilization of natural resources such as land for farming and forests for lumber. The idea of conservation walks a fine line just short of Preservation. Conservationists wish to maintain bio-diversity. The demise of species is potentially detrimental to human populations. Therefore they are proponents of natural reservoirs to maintain viable populations of plants and animals. Their view is that such reservoirs provide a research laboratory that may yield future miracle drugs. They also understand the interlocking web of dependence between each and every plant and animal community. I consider myself to be in the Conservation camp -- sounds a lot like Conservative doesn't it?
We all should be sensitive to environmental issues. I'm sure that none of you would choose to live in a cesspool. That is why I believe it is important to get a Common Sense view posted on this Blog Action Day.

We are commanded by God to be good stewards of the resources that he places in our care -- which is the earth and all that is in it. However, stewardship implies Conservation -- not Preservation. There is a big difference.
Preservationists want to depopulate the earth. They also desire to see those few who are left living in a "natural" state -- being one with nature. It's interesting to me that the only ones they feel deserve to live on this planet are members of their small but very vocal clique. It is a very elitist position. If most of them were placed in nature without their gadgets and gizmos they would starve to death. Many of them are totally dependent on the technology that they condemn. Al Gore is a prime example. What would he do without his jet to travel around the world?
Conservationists on the other hand are focused on sustainability. It is a concept that makes sense. Conservation is caring for resources in a manner that will provide maximum benefit for now and future use. Conservationists are in favor of sustainable hunting and fishing. They believe in the utilization of natural resources such as land for farming and forests for lumber. The idea of conservation walks a fine line just short of Preservation. Conservationists wish to maintain bio-diversity. The demise of species is potentially detrimental to human populations. Therefore they are proponents of natural reservoirs to maintain viable populations of plants and animals. Their view is that such reservoirs provide a research laboratory that may yield future miracle drugs. They also understand the interlocking web of dependence between each and every plant and animal community. I consider myself to be in the Conservation camp -- sounds a lot like Conservative doesn't it?
We all should be sensitive to environmental issues. I'm sure that none of you would choose to live in a cesspool. That is why I believe it is important to get a Common Sense view posted on this Blog Action Day.

Once completed, the regulations will ensure there is a consistent and effective permit system under the Safe Drinking Water Act for commercial-scale geologic sequestration programs to help reduce the effects of climate change.
"Addressing global climate change will require fundamental changes in the way the world generates and uses energy," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "By harnessing the power of geologic sequestration technology, we are entering a new age of clean energy – where we can be both good stewards of the Earth, and good stewards of the American economy.
"EPA is working with the Department of Energy as it carries out its carbon sequestration research and development program and is also coordinating efforts to evaluate potential impacts on health, safety and the environment.
The Safe Drinking Water Act established the Underground Injection Control (UIC) program to allow the safe injection of fluids into the subsurface in a manner that does not endanger current or future underground sources of drinking water.
EPA plans to propose regulatory changes to the UIC program in the summer of 2008 and will invite the public and stakeholders to provide input throughout the rule development process.

EPA has been working closely on this effort with a broad range of Hispanic leaders in the region, from business and civic groups, health agencies and academic institutions, as well as local, state and federal agencies.
“With our partners, we’re finding better ways to meet the needs of our communities,” EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said. “Working together, we’re bringing healthier air and cleaner water to all of our communities.”

China is responsible for 51 per cent of all steelmaking carbon emissions. Chinese plants emit on average about two tons of carbon dioxide for every ton of steel produced. This year their expected output is 500 million tonnes. Experts warn the situation will get worse.
Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) – China alone is responsible for about 51 per cent of all carbon emissions from steelmakers worldwide, making it the world’s worst polluter among steel-making nations, this according to a statement released on Tuesday in Berlin by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) during its annual meeting. "Rather than demand that renewable energy work within existing regulations under the National Electricity Market, perhaps the grid rules could be altered to more effectively deal with wind energy," Roaring 40s managing director Mark Kelleher said.
Mr Kelleher was speaking at this week's Auswind 2007 conference, which brought delegates to Melbourne to hear energy experts discuss the expansion of wind energy generation.

UVALDE – Though crop losses from record rainfall earlier this year reached $200 million, hunting prospects across South Texas are excellent and the money spent on related activities throughout the region will be welcomed, according to a Texas Cooperative Extension economist.
"This is one of the most important economic activities of the year," said Jose Pena, Extension economist at the Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Uvalde.
"When you factor in dove hunting with the upcoming deer and quail season, these activities can boost cattle ranching activities during the year. A lot of ranchers have been taking advantage of hunting lease opportunities or have gone exclusively to hunting operations in lieu of cattle production the past decade."
In the early 1990s, cattle production was the predominant use of range resources, Pena said. However, for the past several years, change has been taking place as more Texans have taken interest in outdoor activities, such hunting, fishing and bird watching.
"Wildlife is now the primary resource on most South Texas ranges," he said. "You're seeing $10-$20 (per acre) gross revenue...(complete article here).

With a top speed of about 110 kilometres an hour, India's Shatabdi Express is not much to brag about by the standards of a French TGV or a Japanese Shinkansen train. Nonetheless, as the stock for one of the country's fastest and most luxurious passenger lines, the Shatabdi trains have a certain prestige. So when, on New Year's Eve 2002, the Shatabdi train from New Delhi to Amritsar was powered in part with biodiesel for the first time, it was a clear statement of the government's desire to wean India off imported petroleum.
Diesel is India's main liquid fuel: the country burns roughly 44 million tonnes, or 320 million barrels, of the stuff a year, as opposed to about 94 million barrels of gasoline. The trains account for a significant part of that. Kunj Mittal, who heads the government-operated rail service's engineering and traction division, says its fleet of 4,000 engines currently burns about 1.7 million tonnes a year, and that he wants to replace at least 10% of that with biodiesel at some unspecified point in the future. But he would need 200 million litres of biodiesel a year. Which is a problem. “At this stage,” says Mittal, “there is no mass production of biodiesel.”
Like many others around India, the rail service is looking to an unprepossessing, poisonous scrub weed to try to do something about that. It has planted a million Jatropha curcas seedlings on unused land along its tracks and elsewhere. It's just...(complete article here).
I've never heard of jatropha before. Moving wild plant species around the planet and planting them on a large scale seems a little risky to me.

Its dry biomass, burned in ovens, can generate 25 times as much energy as the amount of fossil fuel used to produce it, while sugarcane converted into ethanol only produces nine times as much.
But these two energy balance leaders face different challenges and must travel down different paths before they can compete, for instance, as fuels for electricity generation.

The use of cereals and palm oil in producing bio fuels is forcing a price hike on basic foods. Non edible plants now being tested. Meanwhile Beijing sets out plans for renewable energy sources, even if in the short term more expensive than coal.
Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) – China wants to double its use of renewable energy by 2020, such as hydro energy, wind power and solar energy as well as biofuels by increasing their extraction from cereals and vegetable oils. But the high costs are presenting obstacles.
After an initial enthusiasm the world has become aware that it is not capable of producing sufficient grain to feed its population and produce biofuels. The boom in biofuels in recent years has led to sharp rice in world grain prices, with widespread grave social repercussions. David Jackson, of Lmc International Ltd London, estimates that by 2015 a further 100 million hectares of crop production (half the size of Indonesia) will be needed to meet just 5% of vehicle consumption. But to obtain this, entire forests would be decimated.
Sugar cane produces more ethanol, but it requires a lot of water in...(complete story here).
Some of the same issues that China faces are relevant to other countries. Bio fuels is only a small part of the answer -- and probably a temporary bridge to new technology at best. We need to be looking at radically new technologies for future energy needs.

Hydrogen Gardens?
Just about everyone who's been through High School Chemistry knows that hydrogen packs a lot of energy. One of the limitations to hydrogen as a fuel source is the cost of production. The article below is about an encouraging development that could significantly lower the cost of hydrogen production so that it is an economical fuel. About one Kilogram of hydrogen packs the same energy as a gallon of gasoline. It burns extremely cleanly.

Algae are a promising source of biofuels: besides being easy to grow and handle, some varieties are rich in oil similar to that produced by soybeans. Algae also produce another fuel: hydrogen. They make a small amount of hydrogen naturally during photosynthesis, but Anastasios Melis, a plant- and microbial-biology professor at the University of California, Berkeley, believes that genetically engineered versions of the tiny green organisms have a good shot at being a viable source for hydrogen.
Melis has created mutant algae that make better use of sunlight than their natural cousins do. This could increase the hydrogen that the algae produce by a factor of three. It would also boost the algae's production of oil for biofuels.

DNA Testing in Cattle
One of the newest technologies to be applied to livestock is DNA testing. Although still in its infancy, DNA testing shows promise of significant economic benefit to purebred and commercial cattle raisers and to cattle feeders.
Much excitement was generated in the 1990’s with the development of technologies to identify specific genetic markers from DNA samples. The rush to capitalize on the technology was a result of the promise of significant economic benefit to producers. It was anticipated that within a short period of time, livestock breeders would be able to select for specific genetic characteristics that would result in a uniform product with the highest possible value. To many, it appears that the technology has fizzled.
While the “splash” hasn’t been what was projected, the scientists have quietly and steadily been working to identify genetic markers for characteristics that are important to the production process. To date in cattle, markers have been identified for tenderness, fat thickness, yield grade, hot carcass weight, quality grade, marbling, and horned/polled. It also is possible to determine parentage.
The homemaker going to the grocery store to purchase meat doesn’t need to understand the effects this technology will have on her selection. She only wants to know that the product she chooses will be of the highest quality. That quality is determined by many of these genetic markers that are now identifiable.
Pure Bred cattle operations have selected for specific characteristics for many generations. Such selection has resulted in the evolution of cattle types from the short-legged, boxy type of the 1950’s to the tall, lean, higher yielding types we see today. One of the difficulties in making that transition though, is the time required for selecting, breeding, raising, and finally evaluating the resulting progeny for the desired characteristics. DNA testing technologies can significantly reduce that timeframe by allowing the breeder to identify the desirable and undesirable traits of an animal at a much earlier age.
Commercial cattle producers face a different set of problems. They often only know half of the information needed to make good decisions on selecting for specific characteristics to improve their calf crop. Typically, they know the mother of the calf, but because of range conditions, they often don’t know the calf’s sire. They don’t know which bulls are producing the greatest number of calves, and they don’t know which bulls are producing the calves with the characteristics that they are seeking to enhance. DNA testing can determine the parentage of the calf. This allows the rancher to eliminate those animals that are not producing and to retain breeding stock from the bulls producing the desired traits.
When you look at the value of genetic testing from the feedlot’s perspective, you are limited to working with the calf. The value of cattle marketed is often based on the uniformity of the pen of animals, the performance characteristics – such as feed efficiency – and if marketed on a value-based grid, the quality potential of the cattle. If such characteristics are known at the beginning of the feeding period, rations can be adjusted to achieve the greatest value potential of the pen of cattle based on their anticipated performance and quality grade characteristics. Feeding cattle that will grade choice at fewer days on feed results in a higher potential for profitable performance. On the other hand, some sets of cattle may have high genetic potential for tenderness and be a better fit for a branded product that focuses on lean but tender cuts of meat.
The potential of genetic testing in cattle is still in its infancy. However, that potential is enormous. Ultimately, the homemaker will determine the success of the technology. When the shopper can go to the meat case in the local grocery store and select a cut of beef for supper without worrying about how tender it will be, the industry will have scored a great success. Carbon Sequestration Projects
One solution to releasing carbon dioxide into the air through burning -- such as coal-fired electric plants -- is to capture that CO2 and sequester it in some fashion. I'm not sold on the idea. I guess I'm an idealist and am convinced there's got to be something better than injecting it into salt domes. Our government apparently likes to stick our waste into salt domes.

WASHINGTON, DC — In a major step forward for demonstrating the promise of clean energy technology, U.S Deputy Secretary of Energy Clay Sell today announced that the Department of Energy (DOE) awarded the first three large-scale carbon sequestration projects in the United States and the largest single set in the world to date. The three projects - Plains Carbon Dioxide Reduction Partnership; Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership; and Southwest Regional Partnership for Carbon Sequestration - will conduct large volume tests for the storage of one million or more tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep saline reservoirs. DOE plans to invest $197 million over ten years, subject to annual appropriations from Congress, for the projects, whose estimated value including partnership cost share is $318 million. These projects are the first of several sequestration demonstration projects planned through DOE’s Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships.

What will be the long-term impact of artificial CO2 sequestration? Hopefully these studies will give us a clue at least. In the meantime, I think we need to continue looking for better ways to handle it.

English Winter Fair Cancellation

Show cancelled over disease fears
An agricultural show in Stafford has been cancelled over concerns about foot-and-mouth disease and bluetongue.
The English Winter Fair, formerly the National Primestock Show, was going to be held on the weekend of 17 November.
Organisers have said they could not have done anything that may have put exhibitors at risk.
They said they would not have wanted exhibitors, particularly those with pedigree cattle, stranded at the show if the current situation had changed.
This cancellation gives a new slant to the disease fears facing the livestock sector. Would the National Western, or the Houston Livestock Show cancel for similar events in this country? Interesting.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The growing U.S. wind power industry is drawing increased scrutiny from states and the federal government over the problem of spinning wind turbines killing birds.
The California Energy Commission last week adopted voluntary guidelines to reduce wind energy effects on wildlife, and Washington state, Montana and Texas among other states are reviewing measures.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, part of the Department of the Interior, also is developing voluntary procedures for wind projects, a spokeswoman said.
Wind power, which is expected to increase by 26 percent in power generating capacity this year, is mostly unregulated in the United States except by county boards, city councils and local planning commissions.
Wind energy accounts for less than 1 percent of the nation's electricity supply -- enough power to serve 3 million households.

I wonder how this compares to wildlife killed by petroleum products, by hydroelectric dams, by coal-fired electric plants, and all of the other sources of energy. The Texas General Land Office on October 2 awarded the first four competitively bid leases for offshore wind power in the United States. All the leases were awarded to Louisiana-based Wind Energy Systems Technology (W.E.S.T., LLC) and allow construction to begin immediately on meteorological testing towers on each of the four tracts.
The research and development stage will last approximately four years and the production term will be 30 years for each lease. Following the research phase, W.E.S.T., LLC plans to develop wind farms on each of the four tracts. If winds are favorable, the company plans to build wind farms that will produce a minimum of 250 to 300 megawatts per lease.

In these tracts, the windmills will blend right in with the oil platforms. I wonder if the fish will congregate around the base of the windmills the way they do around offshore oil platforms.

One of the critical issues of utilizing hydrogen as a fuel is storage. There is a lot of energy in hydrogen. Thus, it is a dangerous substance. New technologies are being explored to make it safer to utilize.

Science Daily — Researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have developed a model that could help engineers and scientists speed up the development of hydrogen-fueled vehicles by identifying promising hydrogen-storage materials and predicting favored thermodynamic chemical reactions through which hydrogen can be reversibly stored and extracted.
Because of global environmental changes associated with man-made carbon dioxide emissions and the limited resources of fossil fuels, developing alternate and renewable energy sources is important for a sustainable future. Hydrogen is a potential source of clean energy for future use in passenger vehicles powered by cheap and energy-efficient fuel cells, but its widespread adoption has been hindered by the need to store it on-board at very high densities.

No new oil refineries have been built in the United States for more than 30 years, but that statistic hides the fact that existing refineries are constantly being expanded.
A case in point: in late September, Motiva Enterprises announced its plans to expand its refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, increasing its crude oil refining capacity from 275,000 barrels per day to 600,000 barrels per day. As the company puts it, the expansion is equivalent to building an entirely new refinery. Motiva expects the expanded facility to be in full production by 2010. See the Motiva press release.
One of the biggest price impact issues we saw during hurrican Katrina was loss of refinery capacity for the duration of the storm and clean-up. Any time a refinery is shut down for any period of time, it sends ripples through the energy markets. Our refinery capacity is aged and aging -- it is also running at or near capacity. New capacity is a good thing although the committment to build it is risky given the current drive to shift away from fossil fuels.

Then distill the alcohol into fuel. One, two, three, four — and we're powering our cars with lawn cuttings, wood chips, and prairie grasses instead of Middle East oil.
Unfortunately, passing chemistry class doesn't mean acing economics. Scientists have long known how to turn trees into ethanol, but doing it profitably is another matter. We can run our cars on lawn cuttings today; we just can't do it at a price people are willing to pay.

The USDA has released their new "Rural America at a Glance, 2007" publication from the Economic Research Service. It is a handy reference for those policy and decision makers needing information about trends and statistics for rural America.
The Future Shape of Agriculture?
That agriculture has changed through the years is obvious to anyone who cares to look. It began in the dark recesses of history when man first decided that he could grow his own food rather than hunt for it or gather it in the wild. Today it is a high-technology, capital intensive business that requires expertise in multiple disciplines for success. Where will it go in the future?
There are many today who believe agriculture will transition from the large-scale farming operations of today to smaller, more diverse businesses that supply a local market. Some even envision high-rise farms located in skyscrapers in the inner city environment. Such skyscraper farms will be energy self-sufficient with strong emphasis on water and nutrient recycling through artificial climate systems.
Urban sprawl continues to encroach upon prime farming land across the country. Suburbs of major cities spread farther and farther from the city centers replacing dairies, orchards and grain fields with houses, apartments, and businesses. The competition between agriculture and people for water becomes more intense daily, especially in drier areas of the country that are dependent on aquifers and reservoirs for their water supply.
Drought situations in the west over the past year have highlighted the competing demands of agriculture and people for the same water resources. In the illogical world of political expediency, it is often agriculture that suffers. As long as we live in a country of bountiful food this will likely be the case.
Energy costs are another factor of agriculture production that will receive increasing scrutiny over the coming years. There is hope within the farming community that increasing emphasis on bio-fuels will not only increase revenue potential through crop sales but will create the opportunity for becoming fuel independent through on-farm manufacture of bio-diesel and ethanol. With additional energy supplementation through wind and solar power, farmers could essentially “disconnect” from the grid, or better yet, sell electricity to the power companies.
Global warming is another issue that must be considered as we look to the future of agriculture. Whether you believe that global warming is man-induced, or the result of natural climate cycles, there is evidence that warming is indeed occurring. If nothing else, the “idea” that weather patterns are being affected is causing legislation to regulate behavior that will have an impact on agriculture. From alarmist hype about methane from cows, to the cost of fuel, public perception of agriculture will result in regulatory changes that will impact the way we farm.
So, what is my vision for the future of agriculture? Definitely positive, but full of turmoil as we transition from an economy based on fossil fuels to one based on alternative energy sources. Growing population will continue to create the need for more food. The energy infrastructure will become more fractured and localized with much of the energy consumed produced locally rather than delivered by large conglomerates. Transportation costs and efficiency will affect how farm products are delivered to market. The concept of “skyscraper” farms may not be as far-fetched as our first reaction makes them to be. Farms will likely become more diversified and even more dependent on technology. Precision technologies, on-farm energy production and increasing vertical integration will become the norm. Regulations will change in nature from the current form of price support programs to more oppressive rules on nutrient and waste management and possibly even zoning.
The future will require even greater capital investment than is currently demanded. This will result in a bi-modal division of agriculture into a few large corporations controlling vast resources on the one hand and a large number of micro-farms on the other hand that target specific market niches such as fruits and vegetables for local markets.
Now, like any other prognosticator, I want to put in my disclaimer. All of this is speculation. Who knows what the future will really hold? One guess is as good as another. The only thing we can be sure of is that change will happen. Let’s hope it is all good.

This will result in a bi-modal division of agriculture into a few large corporations controlling vast resources on the one hand and a large number of micro-farms on the other hand that target specific market niches such as fruits and vegetables for local markets.
Now, like any other prognosticator, I want to put in my disclaimer. All of this is speculation. Who knows what the future will really hold? One guess is as good as another. The only thing we can be sure of is that change will happen. Let’s hope it is all good.

Rancher Kills Wolf to Save Cattle, Violates Endangered Species Act

October 01, 2007(CNSNews.com) - A Montana rancher killed a wolf to protect his cattle herd, and now federal officials say he violated the Endangered Species Act. This apparently extreme instance led one conservative analyst to claim that the act is doing more harm than good, because it forces landowners to "shoot, shovel and shut up."
Roger Lang is a California entrepreneur who owns the 18,000-acre Sun Ranch, south of Ennis, Mont. Over the last 10 years he has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to help ensure that his ranch is set up and operates legally, especially in conformity with the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
